Petroleum jelly smeared over our bodies,
head to toe, glistened like oily Christmas tree
garlands, with dripping icicle highlights.

Like “Good Country People,” we dabbed Vicks
behind our ears treating olfactory senses to menthol
eucalyptus —an exotic aroma exciting sweaty nostrils.

Environmental crusaders sans bedroom politics.
at noon the next day, we protested oil refineries
cursed Chevron, Texaco, Shell, BP, and Mobil.

Back home we rivaled the magi bearing gifts
of clear lubricants—Vaseline applied with holy deftness,
moisturizing character, baptizing our intimacy.
