Wall Deliria

Sterling Warner

A rococo style antique mirror
that seemed to capture the worst
of anybody and everybody
hung in the vestibule where
all individuals passed; some
who looked into its depths
sought an angelic likeness
while others used it
to straighten hair, identify
boogers they’d deftly pick
like a surgeon examining
the silver nadir of a looking glass.

Many walking full throttle
down the hall would halt
like military cadets and gaze
at themselves lovingly, practicing
smiles, winking flirtatiously,
sighing with utter confidence
the face they beheld mesmerized
objects of attraction as much
as it satisfied themselves, ever
ready to morph in an instant—
project magnetic mystery—illusions
that vanished as reality kicked in.
