towns in America)

In the United States
we live in a
Representative Democracy
and have elections
every 2 or 4 or 6 years

After most elections
we send the winners off
to remote places
        Washington
        Albany
        White Plains
to make decisions
for us – decisions
that we will read
about in newspapers

In the Town of Yorktown
we pick winners from
candidates who
are our neighbors
and who may have won
with tiny vote margins

Then we send them off
to our local Town Hall
no more than 10 minutes
from our homes
to do the town’s business
Town Hall
a place where we can come
to meet with public officials
and make our voices heard
in
        Public Town Board Meetings
        Planning Work Sessions
        Discussions with other town folk

We can also
        Write letters
        Make phone calls
        Go to public functions
and we get answers
        local papers report on meetings
        e-mail alerts come from city hall
        meeting and special announcements are televised

These elected officials
make decisions that affect
our daily lives
        Zoning
        Park maintenance
        Road repair
and larger issues
        How to attract and keep business in the Town
        Direction of the town – Semi-rural or Surburban
