Dr. James Barry was a marvelous
physician and surgeon, a leading
light among medical men of his day.
Trained at the rigorous University
of Edinburgh Medical School, he
enlisted in the British Army
following graduation and served
honorably throughout The British
Empire. His service reached from
Capetown to Calcutta, from Saint
Helena to Ottawa.

Wherever Barry served throughout
the vast Kingdom, improvements
in living conditions and diet and
care for solders, prisoners, the
mentally ill, lepers and other
underserved persons, followed in
in his wake. He was ahead of his
time in advocating against the use
of meat; he was himself a lifelong
vegetarian. While in Africa, Barry
performed the first successful
Caesarean section on that
continent.

Dr. James Barry lived in quiet retire-
ment until 1865 when he died from
dysentery at the then advanced age
of 76. A coroner discovered stretch
marks on the corpse from where the
deceased had given birth, likely the
result of an adolescent sexual assault.
The child, Juliana, was assumed all
these years to be the daughter of
Barry’s brother John.

James Miranda Stuart Barry was
Born Margaret Ann Bulkly, in 1789
In Cork, Ireland.
