Under the Painted Goddess

Amanda Hynds

    You don’t care about me.
You drew me in with high ceilings, and winged goddesses. You invited me with smiles full of teeth and a welcoming hand. I fell into your embrace only to realize the rope in my skin. The net coiled and leaving imprints when you pulled it tight. I look around me, and see a field of those who, like me, fell into your trap and lay hopelessly in your grasp. People who deserve better than the abandoned puppet strings of a greedy master. Who deserve safety and good health, but at the cost, safety was sacrificed. I play along, your puppet full of teeth. All while seething inside, as justice is smothered by green paper. I chaff at your crooked smile, even as you pluck strings at will. There is no end, even as my foot prepares to step outside your ever reaching gates, another puppet is already primed to take my place.
