Leaves

Peycho Kanev

These words we write
do not matter much to most people;
these heavy words like stones thrown
at the glasshouses of our childhood –
they comeback to us.
Sometimes they fly to the sky,
carried by the soft wind,
just to fall down like shot birds.
Yet I love to create them.
And after that they are no longer
mine;
raindrops in the backyard, the towering
white flower of pain in the garden,
treetops bent and silent like old women -
I sit and write and write and write.
Everything that counts: the confused
action of this moment, the essence of
existence, the anticipation of the inevitable
end.
Words, words like stones, like leaves...
We throw them up and they fly
back
with nowhere to fall to
except upon ourselves.
