There’s a man on my back
building a house I don’t want.
I hear his hammering
day and night. The robot-faced
AC unit above my hospital bed
glares at me whenever he’s excited
and keeps the rest of the bay
awake. The aquamarine curtains -
borrowed from the Caribbean -
threaten to return to saltwater.
Sometimes I swear there are shark
shadows at night. The man
on my back doesn’t care. Banging
away at what’s left is what he wants.
Perhaps he’ll shrink and be tossed
to the sharks. Perhaps, really, I’ll shrink
and see the house I laid the foundations
for but never noticed.
