Modern Olympian Ode #36 (1988) Men Overboard

Michael Ceraolo

“for an act of fair play by a contender
which cost or could have cost him/her the victory
by sacrificing,
impeding,
or compromising
his/her chances of winning”
And
on September 24, 1988,
in wind-whipped waters off the Korean peninsula,
Lawrence Lemieux went well beyond
even that high standard

He was sailing a one-person dinghy
in the fifth of a series of seven races
used to determine the medalists,
and
he was in second place in the medal race
when he saw a two-person dinghy capsize
Lemieux left the race course
and sailed toward the overturned boat,
knowing there was no way they’d be able
to swim back to shore even if they were unhurt
He pulled the two Singaporeans,
Joseph Chan and Siew Shaw Her,
from the water and stayed there with them
until a patrol boat came to take the two back to shore
He resumed the race,
but
the detour had cost him and he ended up
finishing eleventh in the overall standings

He was awarded the
Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy,
only the second to win the award
at the same Games at which he was a competitor:

“In sport the goal is to win,
but
there are some things
which are more important than that”
