Becoming friends with athletes from other countries
wasn’t quite enough of the Olympic spirit
for Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar
and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy,
fellow high jumpers
They were close in age, born only a year apart,
but Barshim had much more Olympic experience,
having won bronze and then silver
in the previous two Olympics
Tamberi had been injured and didn’t compete
in the Rio Games; this was his first Olympics
Both men were perfect through a height
of just over seven feet, nine-and-a-quarter inches
Officials approached both men
about a jump-off for the gold medal
Bashim and Tamberi looked at each other,
then asked the officials if they could
forgo the jump-off and each have a gold medal
Surprised by the question,
after consultation the officials agreed
this was an acceptable alternative:
there would be two golds and no silver awarded
