He became a mathematician
by marking the days before release
on that impenetrable cement wall.

And an expert in geometry
by his constant pacing
of that 6-foot by 8-foot rectangle.

He turned his constant staring
through the barred window
into both a study in inner city architecture
and a discourse on the stars
while his interaction with guards
and fellow inmates
became a course in human psychology.

By the time he was paroled,
he should have been as educated as any man
except he left everything he’d learned behind him.
