A sense of things lasting forever

DS Maolalai

god the day’s gorgeous – grey
as high quality kitchenware –
the sky is a drying rack,
stacked knives and cutlery,
saucepans and stainless
steel skillets. you are sitting
outside: your wine cigarette
ash of tannin, your teeth
tannin rough on your tongue.

it is grey, but it’s dry – it is
overcast – red wine’s
for weather. grey as a raincoat;
a shelter we’re sitting beneath.
and I could do this
always – in the grey there’s a sense
of things lasting forever,
like how summer days don’t,
and the winters – certain springs.

there is no time, just wrung-out
towel-sky, without a sun or feature –
no temperature but what’s in your skin,
no birds in the sky, just in clusters
on phonelines like blackberries
growing on motorway hardshoulders.
you could do this – just sit out
on a patio. just sit out.
just sit out. just sit out.
