a house full of plates
scrubbed bald clean
by twitch-whiskers and dog-
tongued enthusiasm.
the untidy kitchen. in corners
the tinnish smell of piss.
it is wonderful – coming home
out of wet wednesdays,
finding this happiness
painting its shapes on the walls.
it’s like playing poker;
sometimes a bum hand
but just sometimes. soul
in a box full of crackers
or opening the kitchen door
to wide eyes and no distant
affection. I love this. it’s worth
everything.
