There is a petition before this court that
you be compelled to have this baby,
declared the judge. “But I was raped,” she
protested. Yes, he said, but was it a
legitimate rape? “It seemed real to me,”
she said, baffled

The judge scowled. But, how were you
dressed? Did you flaunt your body? Had you
anything to drink? Were you sending mixed
signals? he queried harshly. “Maybe it was my
fault,” she confessed. “At least in part, I don’t
know, I’m confused.”

The judge leaned to hear his clerk. Aha, said
the judge, this court finds that the father of your
child is in fact in prison. She nodded. But,
continued the jurist, he will be out in ninety-six
months and he will have rights, possibly even
custodial rights, to the child which you will bear!
Court’s adjourned, snapped the judge, banging
down his gavel.
