Dear Lord Byron, with a quill I wrote:
Those seven, stone pillars of which you spoke
in a dungeon that teemed with torture tools
at medieval Chillon
have inspired these commandments
I gild on a scroll
for your apparition to peruse.
Thou shalt not terrorize a soul
in the name of religion or political rectitude.
Thou shalt not extract any words
by maiming or mutilating a living corpse
in the name of truth.
Thou shalt not at all resort
to solitary confinement
in the name of reform.
Thou shalt not retaliate with spite
on next of kin, a spouse, or child.
Thou shalt not incinerate at the stake
a heretic, a rebel, or a social renegade.
Thou shalt not deprive a man
of the moon, the sun
his cosmic pals.
Thou shalt give the ones who die
their due death rites.
