Obsession

Richard K. Williams

Relating an obsession Maynard said;
I forgot about bagels for fifteen years
then I ate them with cream cheese
till they came out of my ears.

Obsession;
momentary interests rising in our lives.
Monoliths blocking our vision
narrowing our perception
clouding our thinking.
Single minded bewitchment.

On page 1072 the header
in my thesaurus said;
Nymphet-Observation
Or, what I did all day
from various pubs and sidewalks
during Old Hallowell day.

The fleet of flesh
in endless flotilla.
Belligerent in its parade
empowered with its attitude
shrieking, youth is my excuse
I’m dressed to be desired but don’t dare touch!

A warning, not only to me
an unaffected old married man.
But directed toward those young males
too awkward to be seriously considered.
Who yearned and sweated in their longing,
obsessing on the sidelines in their lonely groups

All this occurred prior
to Maynard and I
discussing obsession
on Water Street
outside the lounge
Charlemagne’s, near midnight
where I waxed poetic;
I’d eat cream cheese and bagels
all day and all night.
I’d eat them until
my shit became white.
Merely to complement
Maynard’s opening lines.
