The Blink of an Eye

The blink of an eye.
That’s all it takes, to change
light to dark, sound to
stone-deafness, and full
mobility to paralysis.

In that one inattentive
moment, with the pavement
icy and treacherous, the car
spinning out of control,
leaving nothing behind but a
demolished Mustang
carcass and two people
dead.

And myself. Insensate and
still, on life support forever.
But whether anyone knows it
or not, my mind still works.
It relives that last moment of
freedom, of life, and ponders
how things might have been
different-for me, the driver-
in the blink of an eye.
