wisdom to listen

Linda M. Crate

had a conversation
recently with a friend
that still rubs me
the wrong way,
it was about one of her
friends;
and she took offense
when i said i know what it’s
not like to value yourself—
and she said very waspishly
that she never lost that, that she
always knew her value;
but if she lost herself then that is
not the case—
people are so insistent that they
know their friends better or they have
more knowledge that they’re willing
to put down people they care about
simply to be right even when they’re not,
and i held my tongue and inwardly
rolled my eyes because i knew i was right
and she wasn’t even if she wasn’t
going to admit it;
and it made me sad that she refused
to see my point of view all because it was
her friend and she knew her better—
sometimes an outside perspective can make
you see things you otherwise wouldn’t have,
but only if you have the wisdom to listen.
