Wandering

Ian Mullins

I wouldn’t go out
into the world, but that
didn’t stop the world
from marching through me
as though I was
an occupied country,
using my face for
a doormat, my voice
for a letter box:

but having no use for
my soul
left it alone to rot here
in the attic, spitting on flames
as they rise ever higher
around me, as glad as I am
that this holocaust won’t halt
until the street, the town
and all I can imagine
beyond them are only the ashes
a bored little boy might
pick up, pocket, then wander
on his way; searching
for a better world.
