Social Interaction

Richard K. Williams

A social gathering post pandemic
like peeking outside, after the passing
of a violent thunderstorm.

Gangly and awkward as a newborn foal
approaching people cautiously.
Dare I attempt a handshake?
Be so bold as to hug?
Or maintain social distance.

As if social interaction wasn’t tough enough
before the viral invasion
with people divided over
politics, intolerance, and bigotry
refusing to seek compromise.

A total disregard that
this country is supposed
to be the United States.
