Getting Ready to Go

Denise Cloutier

Washing my face every morning,
You made the routine fun.
You’d wet the cloth with cold tap water,
Wring it out, then playfully tease me.
I’d button up my face and raise my shoulders,
Cringing with anticipation and glee.
When the cold, wet cloth covered my face,
We would both shudder and squeal
Until giggles overtook us.
I was clean and fresh, and
Our hearts were light and happy,
As you helped me get ready to go.

Washing your face every morning,
I cannot make the routine fun.
I wet the cloth with warm tap water,
Wring it out, then comfort and soothe you.
You button up your face and raise your shoulders,
Cringing with anticipation and dread.
When the warm, wet cloth touches your face,
You moan as I gently pat your skin,
Until your shoulders lower in relief.
You are clean and fresh, but
My heart is heavy and sad,
As I help you get ready to go.
