Riding with the Window Open

Denise Cloutier

You see her in the car ahead,
a passenger in the front seat,
her arm extended out the window,
her hand beckoning the breeze.

You follow as she leads you on
and opens her palm to the sky,
offering her hand to the sun’s caress
while wind whips through her fingers.

You watch her hand as it dips and sways,
swooping the air and flirting with flight.
Tracing infinity with her fingertips,
she is dancing, light and free.

You know the beauty of that openness,
that desire to be touched by the breeze,
to reel and swirl, to float and twirl,
flush with the freedom of nothing to hold.

You find yourself wanting, alone in your car.
Though not with her, you share her desire
to escape the shelter of closed doors and glass,
and feel nature’s breath on your skin as you go.

You open your window and reach out your hand.
Splaying your fingers in the cool rush of air,
your hand twists and turns, buoyed by the breeze.
Adrift in the dance, you waltz with the wind.
