Driving To Colorado

Driving west, the scenery is always ahead of me,
never in the rear-view mirror.
The plain may go on forever
but there’s always a mountain in the distance,
sometimes on the horizon,
always in my head.

Sure, my car has put on a lot of miles
these past few days
but the Rockies aren’t the kind of revelation
that show up on a motel doorstep.
They have to be earned.
Only hands on the wheel,
one foot on the accelerator,
can do that.

I pull over at a truck stop,
eat lunch amid the usual chatter
of long-haulers, sassy waitresses
with hair like hay-bales,
and some local farmers
with one eye on the menu board,
one on the weather.

I need this if I’m to continue on.
People fuel my isolation.
Wheatfields bolster my anticipation.
A stacked burger is just about
the tallest thing in this part of the world.
But, if I keep on going,
eventually it won’t be.
