My First Day at School

Susie Gharib

I distinctly remember
my first day at school.
We’ve single-handedly come
to confront the world.

So many blood-shot eyes
colored a painful scene.
Indelible in my mind
are the sobs and tears that streamed.

In cheerless, somber silence,
I watched heart-rending grief
of one particular child
who fiercely kicked and screamed.

Contagious hysterics
began to orchestrate
trepidation at heart
but I maintained a tranquil phase.

With tears rapidly filling
my own bewildered eyes,
I composedly refused
to part with my pride.

I patiently waited
for curtains to be drawn
on that very first day
at a new turbulent abode.

Overcast my eyes had been
but cheeks remained quite dry.
Instead, my heart was deluged
with tears that poured so hard.
