I’m at full speed before
the echo of the starting gun fades
A couple of rivals edge up to me at
the fifty yard mark, but I put it in high gear
and put ‘em away

I’ve set a new school record
and a kid from the newspaper
flashes his light so Mom will have
something new to hang on the refrigerator door

I’m left to wonder if anyone would be interested
in seeing a photo of a guy struggling
to walk on metal legs who takes
half an hour to cover fifty feet
and then he must sit

You’ll never really know us,
those of you who are whole
who can climb stairs, balance on
on a beam, and run a hundred yards
