Manhattan Visit

Stepping onto the sidewalk in Manhattan
My heart beats faster
Partly due to the raw energy of the city
Combined with a feeling like coming home
I never lived here, but my son did

I worked here though, for nearly six years
Those memories of weekends with my son
The Monday through Friday adventures of
Running service call and installs all rushing back

On this trip my wife, son, his girlfriend, and I
Play tour guides for my mother-in- law
Visiting from South Carolina

We make the rounds at tourist attractions
Central Park, Times Square, Public Library, Bryant Park, and World Trade
It occurs to me while at World Trade, that with proper marketing
Humans can turn any tragedy into a tourist attraction
Gettysburg, Little Big Horn, Pearl HarborÉ.

Be sure to stop in the gift shop
Or visit one of the many stands
Pick up a souvenir tee shirt, post card, or tote bag
Bring something home to the kiddies

At World Trade I purchased nothing, instead I located
My childhood friend and next-door neighbors’ name
Engraved in the firefighters’ section of the memorial
The memories of him filled the air around me
