Above syringe-littered concrete
and gang-tagged brick
public housing projects
thousands of ink-colored
birds sentry in branches
gnarled like building girders
after an atomic bomb blast

In nearby Connecticut towns
with picture-post card white
Congregationalist churches
someone is always blasting away
a herd of brown deer or flock
of black birds

And as another night embalms
into another day
insurance company executives
drive towards Hartford

while thousands of crows cry out
from their barbed wire-like nestles
before slashing their wings
towards heaven
