In a leafless & brick city
echoing random but
expected gunshots

thousands of these
black-winged critters
leave their barbed
wire-like branches
to fly up to the safety
that I was taught
was Heaven

But what if paradise or
God is not up there?
(after 60-plus years
I know they are not
down here)

And if no St. Peter
nor gate

Neither is there devil
nor fallen angels
—just crows
in exile or displaced
from their native
forests or farms

birds
that will soon return
to the safety
of thorny coils
and spikes
