Thousands of crows
caw-caw-crying from
the tops of skeletal
mutant hand-like
trees for a morning
still a Rorschach
of broken night

—was it God
or the Devil whose
throbbing mind
just woke up?

Somewhere a siren
wailing between
tenements porched
with amputated sofas
and frayed American
flags

—by afternoon
bird shit splotching
rooftops clothes-lined
bed sheets and from
poles or the backs of
pick-up trucks
the Stars & Stripes

Was it the Devil
who had a migraine?
Was it God
who threw up?

Hartford just cleans
it up the same way
it does the blood the
same way it overdoses
the headaches
