Afternoon Sky

Christopher Hivner

A name popped
into my head,
someone I haven’t
talked to
in years.

He used to be
a friend
but time
and distance
have rendered us
to nothing.

There were days
when we laughed
and others
where talk led
to philosophy
or history,
the past and
its mysteries.

Our paths diverged
leading us away,
slowly at first,
but eventually
like trains
behind schedule.

Now when his face
appears in my mind
I indulge the memories
for a bit,
not too long
because time
has pulled us apart
like clouds
for a reason.
You can’t return
to a singular moment,
not with the same energy,
the same verve,
the same result.

The name of someone
I hadn’t seen
in years
crossed my mind
and I let him
drift away
against the
afternoon sky.
