Broad Shoulders

I have broad shoulders.
My grandma used to say
I could play football
without the pads
because that’s the
kind of thing
grandmothers say.
I have broad shoulders
but sometimes
the weight
settles in my bones
and I sag
into the earth
consumed by
all and everything.
A voice or thought
or a desire
wakes me up
from a dark and bold reverie
to ignite my will.
I climb
brushing the rancid earth
from my body
to ease the pressure.
My grandma probably
would have said
I could carry the world
without help
because that’s what
grandmas say.
