In the Echoes

Numbers written on random walls,
missed connections
yearning for time spent
among the living.
I dial a number
and wait for a voice,
a plaintive entreaty
for a collection of wills.

Full waiting area,
the train station’s nest of
life and lectures
except for those
that don’t make eye contact,
walled inside
a hollow reserve
while voices echo
around them.

Out in the world
or sequestered
in your own,
someone reaches out
through words or song,
with a look or with flesh,
grasping for a connection,
wire to wire,
direct current,
and waits
in nervous silence
for a response.
