“The News”

I.B. Rad

Currently, that blend of fact and opinion
dispensed as “news”
is shaped by a host of variables,
perhaps the most consequential being
site agenda and audience appeal,
with most viewers
selecting sources that bolster their beliefs.
This results in some news
being run by one site ad infinitum
while rarely being played on another
and likewise, it’s why those outlets may promote
opposing views of the same event.
Not surprisingly, revising news to fit an ideology
can produce “fake news.”
Also problematic, most of our news
is skewed toward “bad news”
because it’s usually more sensational
- “If it bleeds, it leads” -
making that old adage ring true
(it’s also this poem’s theme and conclusion)
“No news is good news.”*

*Given time and sufficient interest, one can patronize
  many sources with differing orientations.
