“How did you find me?” she asked in a
quiet voice. She moved her manacled
wrists nervously. The chains were
tight.

The detective looked disdainfully at the
young woman standing before him . He
expanded his thick chest importantly
and told her:

“It wasn’t difficult. After all, there are
only two suspected conspirators
remaining in the state. We have had them
both under surveillance almost since the
night of conception.”

At her questioning look he explained,
“The sperm donor has been in detention
for weeks and has been fully cooperative
in the prosecution of this case.”

She sighed. She could hardly remember
what he looked like now. She asked the
cop, “What’ll happen next?” He jangled the
keys in his pocket, said, “You will be held
in custody pending the birth of the child.”

She frowned. “No, I mean what will the
charges be?” He replied, “Solicitation to
commit a felony; child endangerment;
and attempted murder. We don’t treat
conspiracy to abort lightly in this state,”
he told her.
