your blue eyes
were just blue,
not remarkable
oceans or sapphires or
blue skies;
they’re not turquoise
nor do they shimmer like
gems they’re just blue—

why did i ever let you
bully me for my brown eyes?

my eyes are the life giving
color of roots,
glittering gold in the sunlight,
they’re the color of trees
and earth and even the wings
of birds that flutter through the sky;

your eyes are just blue—

and i have found there is
beauty in me and my eyes even
if you could never truly recognize
either of these, never diminished me
or my worth.
