Strange Conversations

One points a finger to a passing shadow
while the other daydreams into the aroma
imagining gentler winter climes and perhaps
a moment’s respite from the puzzling chatter.

An apparent skeleton in a black suit
carries much anger under the bones
it does not recall a last meal, too busy it is
making prognostics for an impossible future.

Animated masses in dresses made for other soirées
swim in an ocean of age altering substances
speaking faster than their thoughts allow
interjecting meaningless words without sounds.

Many stare at those miniature lives projected
upon screens made for their pocketbooks
earpieces in place they are engaged in lifechanging
exchanges with souls made of silicon.

They leave the lonely comfort of their abodes
for a moment of an illusory existence
stolen here, borrowed there, in this eerie realm
where they remain ghosts of other people’s lives.
