Lineage

Adam Torkelson

One of my sons is a wheel, the other a jellyfish.
One is an engine, the other a tree.

On my way to coffee in the morning I step through a cloud of pollen and a puddle of oil.

One of my sons is a calculator, the other a spoon.

The wallpaper in their room shows a bear riding a unicycle.

One of my sons is a store only closed for Halloween,
the other a glove I never take off,
assured it’s always clean.

One of my sons I fold, the other I stitch.

On the teeter-totter of my consummation,
one pushes away from the ground, one toward it.
Hence, my recondite badge, my auspicious decision.

One is a bite, the other a carrot.
How they annoy each other.

One is a wound, the other a branch. I was scared
of not adjusting, afraid I can’t climb.

I am a man balancing on a unicycle
in front of a crowd of angry bears.
