His Watch

    The first time they met, she studied his watch where his wrist emerged from his suit jacket sleeve. Why had he chosen this watch? Had he been drawn to the band, a simple, brown, leather strap? Was there a reason he selected a silver face instead of gold? Had he admired the Roman numerals or found them a nuisance? Had he even selected this watch himself, or was it a gift from a loved one? She longed to ask, but the time for questions was over. Instead, she smoothed the wrinkles in his coat sleeve and closed the casket lid.
