    As Annie left him for the last time, she drove dry-eyed along the isolated backroad in overwhelming darkness. Out of nowhere, a huge bird glided into the cones of her headlights, banked, reversed, and dove directly into the front of her car with an explosion of feathers. Over in barely two seconds, sudden, violent, unreal. After a heart-pounding moment of indecision, Annie smashed the breaks, got out, and walked to the front to look for ... look for what? A dead bird embedded in her grillwork? Nothing. The bird wasn’t there—nor were her tears. But they’d come later, Annie knew.
