An Unfortunate Choice of Words

I was trying to say I was tainted,
messed up. He asked if I needed
any help. I was sure I needed something
more absolute to convey. He seemed
excited, wanted a few more syllables.
“Slow down,” I whispered and lost
myself in the middle of his sentence.
We were determined to become the exception,
wanted to survive the process,
but tongues are fickle beasts, forked.
Ours split us in two
before our first chapter’s ink had dried.
