I Would Buy That Urn for My Dead Person

A.J. Huffman

if I had a dead person, which sadly, I don’t,
was the comment I absentmindedly made to my niece
when we were at the auction as the assistant struggled
to hold up this exquisite marbled urn. The elegant
green veining splayed across the deep blue of its exterior
struck me as something I would want to spend eternity in.
Returning from the brief reverie, I realized
my niece was staring at me as if I had three heads.
What? I queried.
She did not answer, just continued to stare.
I buy sweaters for my dog. Why wouldn’t I buy a cool urn
for my dead person. It’s much better than the ones I’ve seen
at funeral homes. If I had a dead person, I would buy that,
dump the ashes right in.
“I cannot
deal with you right now,” was all my niece said
as the auctioneer yelled SOLD!
and the assistant began struggling
to get the next item up on the block.
