The owners were partners in a cartel,
but they frequently didn’t act like it;
calling them the Lords of the Realm
was an apt metaphor:
they were out to protect their fiefdoms first,
to the frequent detriment of the cartel,
which made my job difficult at best,
and downright impossible at times
