Travel Arrangements

Richard K. Williams

It’s strange and
a little bit funny
the feeling you get
when you arrive
someplace at night.

Then in the morning
you look around and
everything appears
differently than the way
you pictured it.

Just like people
when you speak to them
on the phone, then you
see them for the first time.
They look nothing like
the way you pictured them.

But people also have
the ability to disguise
themselves. Like the way
my ex-wife suddenly ripped
off her cloak of happiness
to reveal her true persona
Of discontent and revulsion
of me.

Then I sought comfort
from another. Further
bombing the buildings
and landscape of our
marriage.

Until I woke up one day
and didn’t recognize
the place. I escaped
became a refugee
crossing borders
into the country
of my forever wife.
