The shrill whistles of the traffic warden.
The moaning sirens of ambulances
in a constant to-and-fro.
The groaning engines of public buses
reminiscent of green dinosaurs.
The whirring engines of motorcycles,
an inheritance from the aftermath of the Second World War.
The rattle of emptied rubbish bins.
The dissonance of competitive car horns.
The pounding of a pestle crushing garlic
in a very productive kitchen next door.
The wailing of a baby whose mother has entrusted
her new-born to a grandmother’s warmth.
I sit on my bed with my agitated lapdog
and wonder if there is silence in the afterworld.
