There is neither milk nor honey
pomegranates or grapes -
no matter how different their taste is –
to remind you of planet earth
with its hunger and opulence.

There are no houris
or should I say purified women
to be one’s everlasting spouse.

There is neither silver nor gold
emerald or other precious stones
no bracelets or torques
reserved for the chosen as a reward.

There are no prophets
or angels
as neighbors next door.

The pupil paused, drew a breath
and continued despite the tears
upon which he started to choke.

In paradise, there is only my loyal dog
waiting for me to come home.

Amidst the applause that ensued,
the teacher decided that the blasphemous content
of the boy’s speech is to be ignored.
