Cool People

Richard K Williams

If, when I’m in the pub
I allow my mind to wander
I imagine myself in Paris
in the 1920’s
at some anonymous café.

Rubbing elbows with
Fitzgerald, Hemmingway
Ford, and Pound.
Discussing words
their meaning, their importance
conceptualizing images, and dialog.

Then John snatches my attention
by slowly wagging his index finger
back and forth before my face.
Informing me, his gesture is
a microwave.
I respond rhetorically, asking
“what says mark mark?
A dog with a hair-lip.”

Doreen rolls her eyes
sadly shakes her head
then says
“I used to hang out with cool people.”
John glances our way looking puzzled
while I silently compose apologies
to F. Scott, Ernest, Ford Maddox, and Ezra.
