they should be able to keep their childhoods

Linda M. Crate

my mother was a mere child
when she had me because
some monster preyed on her,
and sometimes i mourn that she
didn’t get to have a proper
childhood full of crushes and dances
and giggling;

she was forced to grow up when she should’ve
been hanging out with her peers and worried about pimples—

yes, beautiful things can come from terrible ones;
but it doesn’t make our lives or those lives of those whom we
love any less traumatic—

everyone should have the right to choose
because children shouldn’t be forced to carry kids,

they should be able to keep their childhoods;

and should they choose to become mothers
then they should be able to do so without pressure
or someone breathing down their neck reciting verses
from the book of a religion that they don’t even know or believe in—

abortion bans don’t save lives, abortions do;
and if you’re too clouded with hate to see that perhaps
consider your religion is supposed to be one of love;

and love isn’t selfish and love isn’t cruel.
