You knew a girl was
bad when she inhaled
her cigarette and exhaled
the smoke through her
nose

Later as a painter she lived
a month in the same red flannel
blue overalls and white Converse so
that by the end of thirty days she
wore the graffiti of a New York City
subway car (and how everyone
on campus even the guys wanted
to wear her clothes)

She kept her art supplies in
a tackle box and inside the lid
was a holy card of St. Lucy
holding a bowl with a pair of
eyes and another card of St. Joan
of Arc brandishing a sword

One story went that she grew up
in a trailer park while another claimed
her as a spoiled brat from the Upper
East Side

But whenever she visited Manhattan
she only shoplifted from the best places

Art student Thief (& perhaps secretly
practicing Catholic)
—even if it someday meant
becoming a martyr

she was never going to stop
listening to her own voice
as an artist
