John F McMullen

I’m a poet
and poets write
about many different things
John Keats about love
Mary Oliver about nature
Charles Bukowski about drinking and fucking
and so on

I on the other hand
find myself
writing either
rants or reflections

I just realized that
in many ways
they are similar
rants — about how we got to where we are – a terribly divided country with
        bigotry and hate rampant and little likelehood of change
reflections – about how I got to where I am after growing up in a seemingly
        united country to a wonderful wife, home, pets, friends and community
so I will continue

I won’t or can’t be a Keats, Oliver, or Bukowski
but I seem to be able to make people
laugh or get angry
and I guess that’s enough
