Spell-Bound

Brian J. Pilling

Justice, the poet’s muse, once the virgin daughter of Zeus, now the blindfold American bemoaning her circumstance; “It was the aught years when an economics professor put a spell on me. Now I am as stone-cold as the barren Queen Guinevere. I’m sure I know how he did it too, with one of those complicated word problems he made me memorize. I’m sure, because we had a short-lived affair, because I told him if he didn’t leave his wife by the end of the semester, I was going to change my major to Comparative Literature.”

Now the white-robed Justice can only watch as imposters gather on the courthouse steps below. On both sides of her, the gray-veined marble pediment, pocked-faced with gargoyles holding their noses, forever frowning, putting thumb to bulging eye.

“The professor told me he loved me, that I had him convinced he should follow his heart. He told me he always wanted to be with someone like me, a free spirit. It’s who he was before his wife changed him, pushed him into becoming a department head, because his life’s passions were ghost hunting and witchcraft and proving paranormal experiences were real, proving it with his math. And I think he finally proved it. That’s how I figure he put the hex on me.”

The poet, ready to re-cast judgement, to dis-robe justice, finds he too is spell-bound.
