The Unwritten Letter

With glee, I received that letter you meant to write
for it spared me the effort to respond
in a written or an oral form.
It also spared the letter itself a black ribbon
and an everlasting abode in the attic.

Its contents had oozed from your eyes
like the words that dribble form your mouth
discourteously.

I am certain we would be better off without the goodbye
which you had orchestrated with your smiles
like the denouements of the books you read.

As for the wreckage that you have left behind,
the fragments that have littered my heart,
I will sweep them with the Autumn leaves
that accumulate at my doorsteps
every early morning and windy evening.
